Local 1998 Retirees Committee (SOAR)

The first meeting of the Retirees Committee was held on November 29th. It was agreed that the purpose of the committee would be to provide the local with advice on those issues which may be of concern to it's former members who are now retired from the University of Toronto, Victoria University and St Michael's College. To this end, the participation of all retired members of Local 1998 is welcomed.

It was also agreed that the committee would pursue the establishment of a Local 1998 chapter of Steelworkers Organization for Active Retirees. The international president of SOAR, Lynn Williams and executive board member of SOAR, Dan McNeil were in attendance and gave their support to this initiative. It was pointed out by Brother Williams that membership in SOAR would give 1998 retirees a mechanism to take concerns and issues to national and provincial governments.

It was further agreed that the committee would write to retired members seeking their support for the establishment of a SOAR chapter. This will be done early in the new year.
