Job Evaluation Drop-In Sessions

Do you have questions about job reclassification or assuming additional duties in your role?

Our Job Evaluation team members will be hosting a number of lunchtime drop-in sessions on all three campuses.  Sessions will run from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm on the days below.  No appointment is necessary, so stop by and meet the members of our Job evaluation team and have your questions answered.

USW Local 1998 Awards

The awards program recognizes member contributions in two award categories.  Awards will be presented at the annual holiday party in December.

Award Categories

Health & Safety Award
This award recognizes the outstanding performance of a Local 1998 member towards fostering and promoting health, safety, and environmental issues in the workplace.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrates a commitment to health and safety in the workplace. Commitment goes beyond the requirements of the employee(s) role; it is proactive and preventative
  • Works towards continuous improvement of health and safety in the workplace. For example, activities/actions taken to prevent injuries or illnesses and the prevention of unsafe conditions or practices
  • Encourages others to initiate health and safety policies and procedures
  • Promotes effective integration of health and safety in planning processes in their work area
  • Takes an active role in and being a strong advocate for health and safety
  • Makes an extra effort to improve or correct a specific aspect of safety within the workplace

Making a Difference Award
To recognize a member who has had a positive impact on others and promotes the union’s values in the workplace that is respectful, collegial and supportive.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrates sincere cooperation, a positive attitude and exceptional willingness to assist others
  • Goes the extra mile to support the union’s initiatives and members in the workplace

Who Can Nominate?
Members in any of the five units (Staff-appointed, Casual, UTS, VIC, SMC) can nominate a member. Self-nominations are not eligible.

All Local 1998 members in good standing.  Members of the Awards Committee are ineligible.

Nomination Process
Nominations must be received by Thurs. Oct. 24, 2019 at 12:00 noon.  Late nominations will not be accepted.  Applications will be adjudicated by the Awards Committee. Completion of the Nomination Form is required and submission should be directed to Margaret Bucknam.

Number of Winners
The number of awards given out will depend on the number of entries received and the quality of the nominations.

Recognition Reception
Awards will be presented at the Local’s annual holiday party in December.  The award winners will be featured in USW Local 1998’s Steeldrum.

Call for Nominations for U of T Staff-Appointed Negotiating Committee

Are you a strong advocate for yourself and your fellow USW members? Have you ever considered being a part of your Local’s contract negotiations? Do you know of another member you think would be a good fit for your Local’s negotiating committee?

The current Staff-Appointed collective agreement will expire June 30, 2020 and negotiations for your new collective agreement will occur next year. Your Local needs your involvement, ideas, and support to help us get the best collective agreement possible!

Our negotiating committee is democratically elected and we will be accepting nominations for positions on the committee during the General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, or in writing in advance via a nomination form (see below). The election will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, with advance polls on November 6, 2019.

In order to stand for election, you need to be a member in good standing and you must be nominated by another member in good standing either at the general membership meeting on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, or in writing via a nomination form (available here) by Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at 5:00 pm.

Written nominations can be emailed to Mark Austin (USW 1998 Recording Secretary) or delivered via fax at (416) 506-0640 or hard copy, hand delivery, courier, Canada Post or campus mail to USW Local 1998, Recording Secretary, 25 Cecil St., Suite 201, Toronto, ON, M5T 1N1. A nominee must accept their nomination in person at the meeting or provide written acceptance to the Local’s Recording Secretary Mark Austin by Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 5:00 pm.

There are twelve positions available on the Staff-Appointed Negotiating Committee. Ten positions are from the St. George campus,  one position from the Mississauga campus and one from the Scarborough campus.

*Please note that the requirement of nominees attending at least one third of the local meetings over the past 24 months is applicable for Executive and Grievance Officer positions but does not apply to negotiating committees.
