We haven’t had an update on the University Pension Plan (UPP) for a while, but there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes. There are several key legal documents which must be completed by the end of the year and the labour side and management side (along with a big cohort of lawyers, actuaries and advisors) have been very busy working on them. USW is represented in this process by Colleen Burke, Liz Cherry (President, Local 4120), Kelly Orser (President, Local 2010), John Tartt (Local 4120) and Alex McKinnon (Director of Research, USW National Office). Once the UPP is legally created in 2020, the USW representatives on the Joint Sponsor Committee and Board of Trustees will be finalized and formally announced.
In the meantime, Alex McKinnon and Colleen Burke participated (with faculty and management) on a search committee to select the Chair of the UPP Board of Trustees. After a very interesting search with a number of impressive candidates, we are happy to announce that the Joint Sponsors of the UPP have chosen Gale Rubenstein, partner at Goodmans LLP in Toronto.
